In the morning Ellen says she dreamed that her parents were taken away. Her mother was wearing an elegant black dress, not her Navy dress uniform. Annemarie suggests that her mother and father could be at the beach. They walk there, but see nothing of them. On the return trip, they see a walkway that leads to a water tower. As they walk around it, Ellen notices that the tower is boarded up and some of the bricks are missing. They find a path leading uphill and up to a hidden chamber. They follow the path and find a locked door. Annemarie takes out a tiny key she had found in the door. Ellen is fearful of putting it to the lock. Annemarie reminds her that they are taking nothing from the house. They sit down and Annemarie prays that the lock will open. She puts her eye to the keyhole, but sees nothing. Ellen tries the key in several different positions, all to no avail. As they leave, Ellen notices the letters S.N. in the concrete wall of the chamber.
Ellen feels better than she has all summer. She can imagine her father and mother talking about her. But she becomes sad again as she thinks about them being so far away and not knowing whether or not she is safe.
The girls meet the other members of the Johansens' family. There's a daughter who's a bit rude. The children all play together. Annemarie watches them from a distance, wishing she were a little girl again. The parents are pleased that the children are having fun. Mrs. Johansen says she's a little too old to play with children, and asks the children to leave. One of the children is hurt by her words and runs away in tears. Ellen says she was only joking. The children run back to the pool. Mrs. Johansen tells the children to apologize to the girl. Annemarie tells Ellen not to worry about it.
The next morning, Mrs. Johansen is surprised to see that the girls have chosen a wetsuit for swimming. She and Annemarie then drive Ellen to the beach to meet her uncle. Ellen says the soldiers told them about the time he was imprisoned, but he doesn't want to talk about it. Mrs. Johansen says he was a good man, and he's a good uncle. She says she'll do her best not to let the girls be afraid of the soldiers. Her sister's son was killed during the war, she says.
