Behavioral analysis, also known as operant conditioning, is the theory and practice of training animals to perform a behavior by rewarding them for behaving in a certain way. Animals are rewarded for certain behaviors by, for example, receiving food, water, or other stimuli. The behavior does not need to be a behavior that is required of the animal in its daily life; it may be a behavior that does not normally occur in the animal’s species. For example, in behavior analysis, a rat may be rewarded for pressing a lever that results in the dispensing of food. This is very different from the training of a dog to do tricks in which the dog performs a behavior in which it is not usually engaged.
In 1949, B. F. Skinner and J. J. Willard wrote A Theory of Behavior which describes the adaptation of an animal to its environment. The book’s central idea is that animals behave the way they do, not because they are what they are, but because of the experiences they have had in their social and physical environments. This is called behaviorism, and it states that all behavior is learned, as a result of which an animal behaves more like the people who have been responsible for its shaping than like the animals that it is.

One of the drawbacks to this approach was that we needed to recompile every time we made even a small change to the code. This slowed everything else we were doing down and because we couldn't always have someone waiting for the application to finish building. 827ec27edc
