His most famous work, which was written during World War II, is Waiting for Godot. The play was originally written as two one-act plays and first performed by Beckett and the Irish actor and poet, Peter Pan Guinness in a pub in Saint-Germain-des-Prés on May 19, 1953. The play is mostly performed in French but it is not translated as it is written in the original French.
[Godot is] one of the most studied, monographed, celebrated, and widespread works of modern art, and perhaps as influential as any of the last century. The non-story of two vagabonds loose in a landscape devoid of anything but a tree, having fun or distracting themselves from oppressive boredom while waiting for a mysterious figure who never comes, the play became the ur-text of theatrical innovation and existential thought.. in the second half of the 20th century.
Waiting for Godot is written by Samuel Beckett. Samuel Beckett was born in 1929 in St. John, Beckett's father was a professor of English and Philosophy at Trinity College in Dublin. Beckett was sent to Clongowes Wood College, a Jesuit boarding school in County Kildare. It was here that Beckett first started writing and it was here that he received his first rejection slip from the Irish Times newspaper. Beckett later became a playwright and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969.
