These are all very important questions to ask when you are training for specific qualities. If the athlete cannot adapt to the training stimuli, they will not grow. If the athlete’s mental/physiological capacity cannot tolerate a certain quantity of volume or frequency, they will not adapt. If the athlete is not on the same page as their coach and teammates, they will not adapt.
There is a popular misconception that working on capacity is the same as working on the specific qualities of a given sport. The polar opposite is the truth. Training for capacity is the flip side of training for specific qualities. Successful strength and conditioning coaches should understand that specificity is essential for adaptation and adaptation is the key to success. Growth occurs when you expose an athlete to a variety of stimuli that promote adaptation. Specificity ensures that the stimuli were right for the athlete and promotes adaptation. Every athlete is different, but the adaptations that occur are universal.
This is where it gets tricky. When you are working on capacity, there is a wide spectrum of stimuli to be considered. What does the athlete need? What is their ability to tolerate? What are their mental/physiological influences? What type of motor control is required in the sport? What are the training needs of the other athletes on the team? What is the science of the sport?
