The Windows XP add-on disks, requiring that the Windows 2000 operating system be installed first, allows a user to choose to install the operating system features that they want on their computer. The default installation process will install the Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and the Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) Suite. However, the User Interface (UI) is specifically targeted at users of computers without media centers (such as students, home users, small businesses and a limited number of corporate users). The XP SP2 and MCE are available as a separate installation option on the disk, and can be obtained separately for a fee. The SP2 is the first Windows XP Service Pack release to include support for DVD playback and standard DVD audio. The MCE contains DVD authoring tools, and includes free media streaming from Live Anytime for the Web. The latter is a feature of Windows XP SP2 that is not available for Windows Vista. The XP SP2 is also bundled with other software. One of the most important is Internet Explorer 6, the default browser for Windows XP. Another is the Automatic Updates software, an Internet connection utility that can be used to automatically download and install security updates to the operating system. The XP SP2 add-on disks are available in the following editions (as of August 2007):
The new operating system includes two new APIs, the DxgStub API and the HGLRC API, allowing developers to create games in Direct X 8.0. This version includes the ability to create DirectX-based games for Windows XP, using the Direct3D rendering API. The DirectX development framework was introduced with the Windows SDK, to provide a common set of development tools for all Windows operating systems. The DirectX API is now bundled with the Windows SDK.
The release of Windows XP has caused significant problems for various third-party software vendors, as they have been forced to release major upgrades and patches for their products. Over the years, companies have come to rely on Windows XP for several purposes: image editing, 3D modeling, print-to-PDF conversion, and image conversion to JPEG. Windows XP may remain the only Windows release with the most widely used software applications available, and it remains the most well known version of Windows. Microsoft is not expected to continue development of Windows XP, and Windows 7 and Windows 8 will be the only officially supported versions of Windows that will be released.
