Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014 (and extended support until April 8, 2016).[127] Microsoft ended extended support on January 13, 2015, which removed access to security patches, but many major software publishers continued providing security updates for their respective software until January 14, 2017.[124] Some software providers, such as Adobe Systems, have continued to provide support for both Windows XP and Windows 7 until December 31, 2018.[128]

Microsoft has stated that it does not intend to market or distribute any new non-security updates for Windows XP after July 14, 2015, and that all new versions of Windows and Windows Server will be supported until at least April 8, 2016, and that additional support plans may be available depending on the release.

In 2016, a trial launched in Canada to see if Windows 10 can help maintain the serviceability of ATMs. The trial is scheduled to last until January 2021. If successful, the Windows 10-based ATMs could become the standard for ATMs in Canada, which would impact vendors like NCR, Wincor Nixdorf and Diebold, who have less than 25% of the market share in Canada.[124]
